Theology of the Body (TOB) It is an illusion to think we can build a true culture of human life if we do not help the young to accept and experience sexuality and love and the whole of life according to their true meaning and their close inter-connection. (EV97). “Male & Female He created them”.
Sexuality, which enriches the whole person, manifests its inmost meaning in leading the person to the gift of self in love...the trivialization of sexuality is among the principal factors which have led to contempt for new life…..There can be no avoiding the duty to offer an authentic education in sexuality and in love, especially to adolescents and young adults; an education which involves training in chastity. (Evangeline Vitae 97)

Theology of The Body
St. John Paul II's New Vision for Human Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Life
Theology of the Body is the topic of series of 129 lectures given by Pope John Paul II during his Wednesday audiences in St. Peter’s square from 1979-1984. TOB is Pope John Paul II’s vision of the human person-body, soul, and spirit. His lectures are based on scripture especially the Gospels, St. Paul, and the Book of Genesis). John Paul II discusses who man was in the beginning, who he is now (after original sin), and who he will be in age to come. He then applies this message to the vocations of marriage, celibacy, in preparation for the Kingdom of Heaven.
What is Theology of the Body?
The Theology of the Body (TOB) is a bold, compelling, Christian response to the sexual revolution that is transforming lives and renewing relationships around the globe and across denominational lines. Written by the late Pope John Paul II, the TOB offers an in-depth biblical exploration of the meaning of our creation as male and female in the divine image that not only paves the way for lasting renewal of marriage and family life, but, as one of the most captivating articulations of Christian anthropology ever developed, enables everyone to rediscover “the meaning of the whole of existence, the meaning of life”
The Problem: The sexual embrace is the foundation stone of human life. Sadly, men and women now tend to seek the “sensation of sexuality” apart from the true gift of them.
The Response: In a collection of 129 addresses delivered from 1979-1984, St. John Paul II resolved to clarity and deepens the true meaning of human sexuality.
The Questions: What does it mean to be human? How do I live my life in a way that will bring true happiness?
The Answers: We are created for Love not only as individuals, but also through a communion of “persons,” which is revealed by St. John Paul II as the “spousal meaning of the body.” Christ wants to infuse human, sexual love with divine, sacrificial love.
Made In His Image & Likeness: The marriage of man and woman is meant to point to the Divine Exchange of Love of the Blessed Trinity. As Christ’s gift of self is the origin of the Children of God, so too, the mutual gift of self of husband and wife is to be fruitful and result in the creation of new life.
The Big Picture: The body has a “language” that is meant to express God’s free, total, faithful, and fruitful love. God wants us to “marry” His people—to live with us in an unbreakable bond of love that the Bible compares to marriage. The Holy Eucharist is a renewal of the covenant: Christ’s own Body to His Bride, the church.
Christopher West is a Catholic author and speaker, best known for his work on Pope John Paul II’s series of audience addresses entitled Theology of the Body.

Most people have heard the “whats” of Catholic teaching, but very few have ever heard the “whys.” With profound insight, Christopher West demonstrates that the Church’s teaching on sex and marriage “makes sense”, and, in fact, is the “logic” of Christianity, because it corresponds perfectly with the deepest stirrings and desires of the human heart. This study is for everyone searching for their ultimate purpose in life.
